This is my latest painting on birch bark and it soon turned into one of the most difficult to finish.  The degree of detail is extreme.  I used a brush made with five or six hairs!  Trilliums have always been my favorite wild flower.

Once again, I'm painting my favorite trees, aspen.  I never seem to grow tired of them.  This is an actual scene in Central Oregon that I have visited many times.  This is the largest piece I have done on this new board created just for watercolor.  It is somewhat of a challenge to get used to, but I love the vibrancy that I can achieve.

I painted this scene earlier this year and although it sold the day after I finished it, I wanted to share it with you. When standing in front of it, I actually feel as if I am there.  I really enjoy the effect of suspending reality with paint, brush and a piece of board.  It was a challenge to do, but the quality I achieved has reset the bar for all future paintings that I hope to produce.

This is a new format I have been perfecting over the last five years.  The birch bark paintings are very time consuming, but I am happy with the results. To prepare the bark ,I visualize where the image will fit in between all of the irregularities.  Then I  do shaving with a razor blade and sanding.  This is followed with up to twelve coats of primer.  Each coat gets sanded and polished before I go on to the next one.  As far as I know I am the only artist in the country doing gallery quality paintings on birch bark. I think that it may because no on else is crazy enough to attempt it!

I have always had great repect for Indians and how they lived in harmony with nature. They would only take what the needed and would honor what they used.

When arrowhead hunting or researching historic sites, I sometimes wonder what the tribes thought as they gazed up at a beautiful sunset with its unbelievable colors.

I am still in awe every time that I stand in a field of flowers. It is amazing how they re-generate themselves every spring, generation after generation. I can't wait to stand in a poppy or sunflower field in Tuscany someday.

While painting, it is easy to dream of standing in a field of fragrant lavender in Provence.

I would like to visit there someday, but in the meantime I am content to search out the lavender fields in the Columbia Gorge and Willamette Valley. I hope that you will enjoy my interpretation.

Although I seem to love all flowers, I have a special affection for the trillium. It has been my favorite wild flower for thirty five years.

I have cultivated a grove among the ferns next to the house. When I see the first glimpse of white in early April I know that I have truly survived our long, grey winter.

I can't even begin to count how many old barns I have explored and played in since I was six years old. I still get that sense of excitement and mystery when I look in a barn door or window. Old wood barns are rapidly disappearing from the landscape and I feel a sense of urgency to record the ones I come across before they too are gone.

I have always been intrigued by the random and almost whimsical way that a rancher will place a board here or an odd little window or door there for no apparent reason.

Someone gave up painting this barn a long time ago which has added to its character.

I was thrilled to find a vineyard whose leaves had turned a bright, golden yellow. With a warm evening sky, and rich autumn colors, this little painting radiates warmth and calmness.

I have enjoyed recreating Native American artifacts for twenty seven years now. Painting the illusion of age and texture can be a great challenge and accomplishment. I admire their use of natural materials to make even everyday articles into works of art.

This painting depicts an Osage tribe's ceremonial gourd rattle and shell necklace. I tried a new type of painting surface called clayboard. It allowed me to achieve an incredible amount of fine detail, but was a real challenge to work with. It is a good thing that I've had a few years of practice!
